How to Download WordPress Sites

WordPress is one of the most popular CMS (Content Management System) used to develop websites and blogs. It powers up to 40% of the internet. If you have created a WordPress site and want to create a backup or transfer it to another server, you may need to download the site. In this article, we will show you how to download WordPress sites in just a few steps.

Step 1: Install an FTP Client

To download a WordPress site, you need to have the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client installed on your computer. There are several free FTP clients available such as FileZilla, Cyberduck, and WinSCP. Choose the one that works best for you, and then install it on your computer.

Step 2: Connect to Your Server

Once you have installed the FTP client, open it and enter the following credentials to connect to your server:

  • Hostname: Your website domain name or server IP address
  • Username: Your FTP username
  • Password: Your FTP password

Once you are connected, you will see the files and folders on your server.

Step 3: Download WordPress Files

To download your WordPress site's files, go to the public_html or www folder, which is the root folder of your website. Right-click on the folder and select Download. The FTP client will start downloading the files to your computer. Depending on how large your site is, this may take a few minutes.

Step 4: Download WordPress Database

Your WordPress site's data is stored in a database. To download the database, you need to access the cPanel of your server. Login to your cPanel and click on phpMyAdmin. Locate the database for your WordPress site, and click on Export. Select the Quick Method, and then select SQL as the export format. Click on Go, and a file will be downloaded to your computer.

Step 5: Compress Files

Once you have downloaded the WordPress files and database, it's a good idea to compress them into a single file to make it easier to transfer or store as a backup. To compress the files, right-click on the downloaded files and select Add to archive. Choose a name for the archive file and select ZIP or RAR format. Click on OK, and the files will be compressed.

Congratulations! You have successfully downloaded your WordPress site. You can now use the downloaded files to move your site to a new server or store them as a backup.
